2004

This coming year was going to be huge for Puddle, with a full tour scheduled, television events, and an overseas trip to Iraq, it remains one of their busiest years to date. The highlights don't even begin to cover every aspect of tremendous year, they hit the dirt running and never looked in the rear view mirror to see their footprints of where they had been.

TOURING

After a break from the chaos of 2003, Puddle began the first of many segments of touring for 2004.  They crisscrossed the country from New Mexico to the far reaches of Maine and south to Florida in a spring/summer tour from January through the end of June.  These were a mix of concerts; some dates were Puddle headline shows with Smile Empty Soul and other local bands as support acts with tickets averaging $20.  Remaining dates matched them up with Detroit native Kid Rock and The Twisted Brown Trucker Band.

Besides concerts, there were several special events and one included an MTV Super Bowl XXXVIII pre-game party.  This event was hosted by MTV and sponsored by the Pepsi Super Bowl Concert Series and Puddle was one of several bands that got the show started.  Hosted by Cedric The Entertainer, performers included N.E.R.D., Nelly Furtado, Ice Cube and others.  A definite highlight from the Verizon Wireless theater were Puddle's performance of Blurry and Heel Over Head, their current single from Life On Display at the time.  The Houston Chronicle promoted the event with a picture of the band and show details in their January 27 edition.

At a side event during Super Bowl weekend, Wes joined his friends from the jam band Camp Freddy (Dave Navarro, Matt Sorum, Billy Morrison, Scott Ford, Donovan Leitch) for the Maxim Magazine Super Bowl party.  Set up as an actual circus environment, Camp Freddy had several musical guest stars that performed a variety of rock hits for the set list.  Wes was joined on stage with former Alice In Chains' Jerry Cantrell during the cover of AIC's Man in the Box.

Puddle of Mudd now has their own special day in Springfield, Illinois, March 2, 2004 thanks to the WQLZ and Mayor Timothy Davlin.  Puddle of Mudd tickets were in hot demand as evidenced by an all-time record sell-out (reportedly in less than five minutes) for a concert under the sponsorship of 92.7 WQLZ.  A pre-show interview by the radio station and a fan meet and greet left no clues what was to happen later in the evening.  Puddle put on a spectacular show that included Instruction as support band for this Budweiser True Blue Music Concert.  Following Puddle's performance, the band was to find out just how important the day would be as the city of Springfield adopted the members of the band by officially declaring March 2, 'Puddle of Mudd Day' complete with a proclamation by Mayor Timothy Davlin at The Illinois Building where he also presented the members the key to the city.  The band was caught by total surprise at the honor and the announcement lead to a thunderous applause by the audience and jubilation by the quartet and their crew.  The moment was captured on a video camera by an audience member and the footage was posted on the WQLZ website along with photos to commemorate the event.  As part of a wild week of festivities, the radio station held a contest with four lucky participants competing for a complete Puddle prize pack for the concert. Contestants were to survive locked in a hotel room minus any luxuries and even the barest of essentials were hard to come by, making for an interesting showdown to the very end.

Tour dates continued from June 29 through July 31 with Canadian rockers Nickelback and the Escatawpa, Mississippi based band 3 Doors Down.  These were large-scale venues and arenas, most of them to sold out audiences, three great bands with a reasonable admission price.  In most cases if someone was a fan of one band, one was a fan of the others as well.  It was a long concert set each night as either Thornley or 12 Stones were an additional act.

After a two week break, Puddle were back out on the road from Aug 16-September 5 as support band for headliners Nickelback.  Consisting of mostly state fairs and radio festivals, it was a nice, short tour that also featured Finger Eleven as openers.

It was in September Puddle took a long detour, halfway around the globe then returned to the continental U.S. to finish up touring October 9 in Beaumont, Texas at Big Dog Jam 4.

PUDDLE AND NASCAR

One very special event for Puddle happened to fall in the middle of the Nickelback/3 Doors Down tour was July 9 in Joliet, Illinois at Chicagoland Speedway.

How fast can a Puddle of Mudd move?  The answer is 183+ miles per hour when it is painted on the #2 Dodge Intrepid NASCAR of Rusty Wallace.  As part of the Miller Lite 'Rock 'N Racing' Concert Series, a one-time paint scheme featuring Puddle of Mudd appeared on the Wallace car for the Tropicana 400 at Chicagoland Speedway on July 11. The graphics featured Wes and Paul on the hood, Greg on the passenger side quarter panel, and Doug on the driver's side quarter.  The car made its debut during qualifying on July 9 as Wallace set his sight on the pole position.  Denied one of the top spots, Rusty qualified mid-field at position #20 for the event.  He was able to run a clean race, and the Mudd car was in great shape after the day's event and came in just out of the top 10 finishers at #11.

With much fan-fare, Puddle was part of the weekend festivities and performed a free concert at the race facility on July 9, 2004.  As the sun began to set on turn four at Expo Village, a boisterous crowd had gathered at the Miller Lite stage earlier in the rain.  The Lovehammers, a regional band whose lead singer Marty Casey would later try out for Rockstar: INXS, warmed up the crowd as the opening act.  Thunderstorms were present in the area but clear skies opened up just in time for Puddle to hit the stage.  Nascar and Mudd fans of all ages were packed elbow-to-elbow and ready to get the party started.  Wailing out the gate, Puddle performed Control, Bring Me Down, Drift & Die, Bleed, Basement, Spin You Around, Away From Me, Nothing Left To Lose, Think, Cloud 9, Blurry, and She Hates Me.

After Wes having dropped the F-bomb a few times during the show, they were hesitant to do the long-time crowd favorite sing-along-song She Hates Me for the encore, as it was an all ages show and the band had been warned by event organizers against the use of profanity. With screams of more from the audience, Puddle bounded back on stage, with a twist and at Wes' request, the crowd was to do the singing and he would 'join in' for the "she loved me so much she left me" song.  The audience was more than happy to oblige, with a rousing, "Met a girl, thought she was grand," and the decibel's were off the scale when it reached the chorus of, "She f'n hates me …" This was a crowd who weren't going to let track officials, security, or other rigid-ruled-authority figures keep them from singing the words as they were written.

In a spirited show of unity with outstretched arms, the audience members were the stars of the encore, while Wes was conductor of the rock symphony and its backup singer.  It kept Wes in the clear with the event officials, after all, how could you arrest several thousand people for using profanity in a public place.  Closing out the event, the familiar satirical lounge version of She Hates Me by parody singer Richard Cheese played in the background while some of the band members signed autographs for the front row fans, threw guitar picks to the audience, and Greg tossed pairs of drumsticks to some of the luckier ones who were able to catch them.

Wes, Doug, and their POM assistant Jose appeared in a taped interview segment that aired on Fox Sports Network the day of the race.  One could tell it was a big event for them and awestruck can't begin to describe the smiles on their faces.  Doug was given an extra chore while attending the pre-race session, he was assigned the task to steer the car on practice day as it was pushed into the pit inspection station. Without an incident and with an eagle's eye, he was able to steer it to the marked spot perfectly.

Action-Performance Nascar Collectibles issued two die-cast collector cars featuring the Puddle of Mudd paint logo.  Available in 1:24 and 1:64 scales, these precision made cars accurately depicted the Miller Lite car and are being sought after by Muddfans and Rusty Wallace fans alike.

PUDDLE ROCKS THE TROOPS

Iraq/Germany 2004

Every band has their story for their most memorable road trip to a gig; there can be the road trip from he** to the one where you barely made it to the show in time.  For the members of Puddle of Mudd, there is one trip that stands out above all of the others as the best rock and roll road trip of all time in September of 2004.

Not many can lay claim they arrived at their band's latest gig outfitted in bulletproof vests, combat helmets, and camouflage via a C-130 military cargo plane, it would redefine the ultimate 'Rock n' Roll Road Trip.'  Whether Puddle agreed with the War in Iraq or not, they felt it was important to support the troops who had been called to duty to do their jobs.  Puddle of Mudd not only gave the politically correct answer, "Yes we will go entertain the troops," but also had the courage to back up that statement without any hesitation.  Many artists had previously volunteered only to back out later and Puddle were not going to let the troops down.

In conjunction with the Installation Management Agency – Europe (IMA-E), American Forces Network, Armed Forces Entertainment and AKA Productions, Puddle was on their way to Germany and Iraq to perform three special shows for the soldiers sponsored by Morale, Welfare, and Recreation.  Plans called for rock performances in Baumholder, Germany, Tikrit, Iraq (birthplace of Saddam Hussein), and Friedberg, Germany.  A poll had been taken of some soldiers in Germany and Iraq for which rock band would they like to see and Puddle clearly won out as one of the top favorites.  Other popular bands had the potential to have this same opportunity to treat the American soldiers, but they decided not to participate; leaving the door open for Puddle to say without hesitation they were on board.  Christopher Titus, who had starred in his own television sitcom Titus on Fox Network, was also quick to say yes and teamed up with Puddle for the three-show event.

Departing from New York City on September 8, many hours later they reached Baumholder, Germany where they were to take part in the ceremonies welcoming home the U.S. Army's 1st Armored Division.  A daylong celebration for the military and their families on September 10 complete with parades, carnival rides, food, and a variety of entertainment greeted the attendees.  More than 5,000 people were on hand for Puddle when they took the stage and soon the crowd was singing in unison to most of the words to their hit singles as well as the die-hard fans who knew all of the words to the rest of their songs.  The show rocked so hard, it had to be stopped several times for crowd control, the moment to unwind by the troops had come and unwind they did.

Wes, Doug, Paul, and Greg were able to meet the troops first hand before and after the show and were more than happy to oblige them with autographs, pictures, and camaraderie.  Fans who were already familiar with the band were impressed they had taken the time to come out, and those who were getting a first glimpse had a new respect for the rockers who demonstrated an unselfish act of putting themselves at risk.

One special occasion was the bands' visit to the recovering, injured soldiers at the 25th Medical Transition Company in Baumholder.  While donning military helmets and protective wear, they were able to chat with soldiers, give autographs, and impart encouraging words of support to these brave men and women who were willing to put their flesh and blood on the line to help restore order to the chaotic Middle East.  Each soldier had a special story to tell of their ordeal, often moving the guys of Puddle to a very emotional place within themselves.  To say it was a life-changing experience was an understatement, and it was only the beginning of what was to come.

The next day the band was on their way out of Frankfurt, Germany to Camp Doha in Kuwait to prepare for the next show, deep in hostile territory.  While waiting for their departure to Iraq, they continued to visit the soldiers in Kuwait, again hearing many of the soldiers' personal stories and were also given a 'thanks' by many for what they were doing to bolster morale within the ranks.

Soldiers at Forward Operating Base Camp Speicher in Tikrit, Iraq had been told Puddle of Mudd would treat them to a rock and roll show on September 12, but many of the troops had previously gotten their hopes up for other events and weren't going to believe it until they saw it.  With defensive flying protocol the C-130 rapidly decreased altitude, dipped, swerved, and weaved to deliver the band and their crew into the Iraqi hot zone courtesy of an war-torn airstrip, a mere 100 miles northwest of Baghdad.  A Black Hawk helicopter and military Hummer vehicles were their impromptu limousines, dirt floors and no running water were their five-star hotel accommodations, yet they were just as happy to be there as if they were at the Waldorf-Astoria.  Not a single complaint, they were on hand for the big picture.

Before the band's performance, Wes, Doug, and Greg took their first ride in a Black Hawk helicopter and got a quick overview of Tikrit.  They were able to visit one of Saddam Hussein's elaborate palaces, and were flabbergasted that a man could live such a luxurious lifestyle as his people just down the street were living in shanty houses and in severe, distressing poverty.  It was an eye-opening experience.

MP's, AR15's, and 9mm's brought new meaning to the term 'venue security' at a bombed-out soccer stadium as Puddle of Mudd delivered a small piece of the United States while Bradley tanks stood sentry.  Flatbed trailers served as the stage for the first show Puddle ever played in Iraq, and it was an experience that won't soon be forgotten.  There was a delay in the show by several hours due to technical difficulties with the power supply, but everyone was excited the band had come so far and they patiently waited.

The U.S. Army's First Infantry Division's rock band opened the show and got the mood started.  With 1,200-1,500 soldiers attending, the dry, sandy location was soon a stomping ground for GI's who were ready to rock, and even if for only an hour they could forget they were fighting a war, relax, and have a great time.  It was like a giant dust bowl, every step one made stirred up the dirt, the heat was almost unbearable but it was a small sacrifice in the eyes of the band for those who have served for the good of a greater world.  The band closed with the usual crowd favorite, She Hates Me and were soon joined on their makeshift stage by a dozens of women soldiers who were happy to belt out the infamous lyrics of 'she f'n hates me' with the band.  Women armed with deadly weapons were typically an uncommon sight at a Puddle show.  Everyone was caught up in the merriment and with a little imagination; it was as if they were at Madison Square Garden, miles away from the bombings and reality of war.

More meet-and-greets and eating in the chow line with soldiers from all walks of life closed out this unforgettable opportunity.  It was now on to Kuwait for a layover then on their way back to Germany for one more show.

September 15 was a big day in Friedberg, Germany as the U.S. Army's 1st Armored Division continued the welcome home ceremonies.  Once again, Puddle band members and Christopher Titus were at meet-and-greets and met wounded soldiers at this base as well.

One extraordinary soldier afforded the band one of the most humbling memories in their careers.  He is Army Staff Sgt. Jason Pepper, a valiant soldier who was the victim of a car bombing in Karbala, Iraq and is now blind and has been left with an injured arm, gave the band a priceless keepsake. He had been the recipient of The Purple Heart and The Bronze Star with Valor, two of the military's highest honors.  When he met his favorite band that day, he presented his Bronze Star Medal to Wes, Paul, Doug, and Greg as a gift.  They were very reluctant to take such a prestigious medal, something he had earned for his bravery but Sgt. Pepper was insistent and with many tears of pride the band accepted his offering.

Friends and families of the band and crew worried for their safety; it was an emotional time for everyone leading up to their departure until they everyone was home safe and sound on U. S. soil.  No doubt, it was a dangerous choice to go overseas at this time, but when you do something for the good of someone else, you have faith that your karma will protect you.  Everyone arrived home safely and though the risks were huge, the rewards were even bigger and they would volunteer to go again if they were asked.  Of course they were scared at first, but when they saw the appreciation on the faces of those who faced danger everyday, it was a small price to pay.  One should ask, would they do it again?  Clearly the answer is yes as evidenced by interviews after the band returned home, not only would the band bet their ass on it, but their cahoonies as well.

TELEVISION

01-16-04 The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

Who's Marcello?, was the question the fans were asking after watching Puddle's appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.  While introducing the band, Leno hit on their previous album sales for Come Clean at over 6 million copies worldwide, complimented them on being a 'terrific rock and roll band as well as announcing they would be kicking off their tour January 23.

Singing Away From Me, Wes made the one word statement 'Marcello' via a magic marker on a custom white t-shirt.  Once again, the censor's were kept busy bleeping out the profanity, one thing you have to say for Puddle, they believe in doing the song the way it was written to preserve the writer's integrity to the material.  Paul was really in the spirit of the music with his trademark spinning-while-I-am-playing moves on stage, Doug had his own moves on the other side of the stage while Greg kept it rockin' with perfect timing in drums while doing backup vocals.

01-30-04 MTV Pepsi Super Bowl Concert Series, Houston, TX

The members of Puddle of Mudd were already huge sports fans but to be asked to participate in the XXXVIII Super Bowl activities airing on MTV, as part of the Pepsi Super Bowl Concert Series was a rocker's dream come true.  The city of Houston was the host as football fanatics from the four corners of the earth gathered to watch the defending champs New England Patriots go head-to-head against the Carolina Panthers at Reliant Stadium.

It was the weekend of Janet Jackson's notorious 'wardrobe malfunction', but not everyone was impressed with the half-time show or came to see the other musical extravaganza's that had the city going non-stop for days on end with every genre of music at concerts and football parties.  However, rock fans packed into the Verizon Wireless Theater on January 30 to catch some of today's popular artists at their best.  Emcee Cedric The Entertainer brought his unique style of comedy to the event that included Puddle of Mudd as the headliner act.  Joined by other entertainers Nelly Furtado, N.E.R.D., Ice Cube, Eve, and Peter Correals, the evening was a big hit for those in attendance plus those tuned it at home.

Introduced by Ice Cube, Puddle of Mudd were the showstoppers and launched into their crowd-pleasing hit Blurry.  Wes' delivery on this night was emotionally charged almost as if the song was freshly written and he was feeling the angst from where the song was penned all over again.  Clutching the microphone and going to his knees Wes pleads to the crowd "take it back, take it back…" trying to ease a never-ending pain.

Doug showed his loyalty to his hometown favorites the New England Patriots by sporting his oversized #12 Tom Brady jersey.  Not to be left out for showing support for his favorite team, Greg showed his allegiance with a New Orleans Saints hat.  Football fans, you have to love them for their allegiance to their beloved teams.

They had a superb performance and to celebrate Heel Over Head as the second single from Life On Display the song was showcased as the closer of the MTV program.  Accompanied by his PRS guitar emblazoned with the word SLAVE, Paul was unyielding on the lead guitar demonstrating his command of the instrument while Greg who left the stool many times during his drumming excitement and Doug's bass lines packed a wallop, the audience was reminded what a great mesh they are with Wes who delivers his own inflection of personality as he stands front and center.

Though they were unable to attend the game due to touring commitments, Doug was particularly ecstatic as the Patriots won their 4th out of 5 attempts at the title with a win over the Panthers of 32-29.

04-01-04 The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

In support of the second single Heel Over Head receiving radio airplay, Puddle were the musical guests on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.  As Leno introduced Puddle, he made the statement in essence proclaiming Life On Display had already gone platinum.  This was confusing to fans for as of late 2004 it had not been certified by the RIAA.  It is assumed the sales mentioned were for worldwide sales as to date it has not reached platinum status.

Leno, Rap artist Xzibit, and actress Selma Blair viewed from the side stage as Puddle dished out a serious and steady performance, deep toned as if in a grotto, it's a unique sound that comes from performing on the Leno soundstage.

04-06-04 Carson Daly

From a black and white checkerboard stage late night guest Tim Robbins was on hand as Carson Daly introduced Puddle performing Heel Over Head in Carson's New York City studio.  A look of concentration was on Wes' face as he belted out 'Don't you walk out that door…' Wes, in his ear-hugging blue toboggan and Doug in his brown hat, were vocally in-sync as Paul worked his magic on his guitar in his corner of the stage.  Timekeeper Greg was intense as usual on the drums rarely raising his head, the only evidence there was a musician in the back were his visible arms flailing and the cymbals crashing, he was lost in the moment of performing.  The only thing that would have made this show any better would have been some time for Carson to talk with Puddle, but as with many late night shows, there isn't any time allotted for comments or questions to the band.

06-26-04 Fox Sports Network, This Week In Baseball

Fox Sports Network combines the best plays and bloopers in baseball for the week and airs a montage of clips with commentary by noted celebrities in a segment titled, This Week In Baseball.  As the clips play for Wes and Greg, Heel Over Head plays in the background, they show the lighter side of their sense of humor with their witty inflections. Wes notes his favorite team is the Kansas City Royals, they are his hometown team and won the World Series in 1985.  Greg favors the Texas Rangers and has been a Nolan Ryan fan for a long time; he likes the classic, old school pitchers.  One-liners of, 'there you go Angel Dog, **west Airlines we have no more flights as the outfielder bites the dirt, oh I bet that didn't hurt, it didn't look so painful, that was amazing he looked like a ballerina while making a leaping catch, Nice!, see that's why I play music,  no way no way! in a disagreement with umpires over a bad call on first base, to it's over the fat lady has sung bro,' were the highlights of the best of clips. Dispersed between baseball footage were clips of Puddle of Mudd's newly released video Heel Over Head, Wes and Greg are comical leaving us to wonder if we were really watching a skit from Saturday Night Live.

06-30-04 Fox Sports Network, Fusion TV

Fox Sports Network had a chance to catch up with Wes and Greg at Music Midtown in Atlanta.  Keith Alan from the show Fusion TV wanted to know what it is like when they hear themselves on the radio and Wes was hilarious, "Oh my God, when you hear it, as a musician you wait a long time and it is great when it happens."  Greg has an unconscious 'radio fright' when he hears their songs on the radio, even though it isn't live he waits to hear himself mess up.  They jump to a clip from Music Midtown, the band's live performance of Control.  Keith changes subject and says there is a professional wake boarder, Robin Friday who resembles Wes and he gets constantly picked on; every time he is up they play Puddle of Mudd music as his background music.  Wes said everyone thinks he looks like the WWE wrestler The Edge, but consoles Robin Friday; we aren't bad looking so it's all good.  They talk about the new singles, Away From Me went to the top ten, Heel Over Head did as well, so everyone get out there and vote to push the newest track Spin You Around.  Wes describes their music as Super Rock, straight up. Then Wes adds soup or rock; you can have a bowl of soup with it.

07-09-04 Speed TV, Nascar Rusty Wallace/POM car Qualifying

Live from Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, IL at the Tropicana 400 qualifying round, Muddfans had their first glimpse of the one of a kind paint scheme of the #2 Puddle of Mudd racecar of driver Rusty Wallace.  Rusty is hopeful to do well qualifying, but admits he doesn't know any Puddle of Mudd songs.  The band was really excited to be on the racecar for the first time and they were down on the track earlier and signed the hood.  Rusty mentions that Puddle will be doing a concert at the track shortly. Speed TV's coverage of the day covered a few laps of the #2 car thundering around the track and qualifying in position #20.

07-11-04 Fox Sports Network, Nascar This Morning

Taped while at Chicagoland Speedway on July 9, Fox Sports Network aired a pit row interview with Wes, Doug, and Jose (Puddle crew member) where Rusty Wallace had debuted the #2 Puddle of Mudd racecar.  Hosts Winston Kelley and Rusty's brother Kenny Wallace were enthusiastic to talk rock n' roll and racing.  Kenny had just seen Wes on the MTV Icon Series paying tribute to Metallica and he is a rock music fan.  Wes summarized they have been touring and promoting their new album Life On Display, they are having fun hanging out at the track and they are proud to be on the Rusty Wallace car.  Kenny promoted the die-cast model car available featuring Puddle of Mudd manufactured by Action Collectibles and they were rooting for Wallace to win the race.  Winston wanted to know if there was such a thing as too much Miller Lite in a Puddle of Mudd, and Kenny took up for the boys saying with rock and roll you have to have the Miller Lite, but when the subject turned to the rock and roll lifestyle, guilty faces couldn't keep back the snickers of laughter.  As the scene closed, we were afforded a close up view of the hood autographed by the members of Puddle.

07-11-04 NBC, Nascar Tropicana 400, Joliet, IL, Rusty

Wallace/POM Car Races

08-02-04 Fuse TV, Daily Download

As Fuse Daily Download hosts Steven and Marianella greet Wes and Doug, the in-studio audience gives them a warm welcome.  They discuss the new album Life On Display and note that Puddle did double duty on the disc as producers.  Is that unusual for bands to do that, the host asks and Doug replied they are interested in producing.  Wes always has his ears open for new talent and encourages people out there with a band to not give up.  Though Come Clean was successful, Wes feels that Life On Display is a better album, despite the pressure after the first album.  As Marianella comment on sales of five million, Doug adds that is for worldwide sales.

They introduce the video for Spin You Around and as it plays, Internet fans who had registered on the Fuse website had the opportunity to ask the band a question. The question and answers appeared on the screen as the video aired.

After the video the questions continued, the hosts ask if the video is from a real live situation and Wes said that situation has happened to a lot of people, a lost love at a young age, it's magic. The band came up with the treatment, everyone that acted out the parts did a great job, including model Marissa Miller.  They try to keep the video close to what the song lyrics reflect.

They talk about the current tour, going out with 3 Doors Down and Nickelback.  Wes compliments 3 Doors Down, "they are super cool cats."  Puddle had previously toured with Kid Rock and his Twisted Brown Trucker Band, and Wes delivered a shoutout to everyone in Kid's organization.  Last year Puddle had toured for some smaller clubs, which was great and now they were ready for some bigger shows and larger audiences.

It is here Wes drops some hot-off-the-press band news, which had caught the home viewers' attention and they were quickly rewinding their tapes to hear it again.  A major announcement by Wes, it was in the works for Puddle to go over to Iraq and play for the troops. Steven seems caught off guard by Wes' remark; he was unprepared.  Marianella jumps back in to their regular tour and talks about when Puddle was in the studio back in November of 2003 on 7th Avenue Drop for the Life On Display album drop, it seems Wes had borrowed Steven's jacket and wore it on the show and Wes thinks he still has it, but offers the boy scout shirt he has on as a trade.

After playing a video for the countdown, the queries continue, how did the band get their name, and though the question has been played out after five years, Wes explains about the local river flooding.  Someone wants to know what is it like to have the press around all of the time, you have to accept it states Doug, there is a good side to it, you can use your celebrity status to get people to sign up to vote and encourages the listeners to head over to puddleofmudd.com and register to vote and also on rockthevote.com.  You can use publicity for good causes and it is important to vote, voice your opinion.

Steven gets back to the band going to Iraq, plans are not finalized and the locations are unknown as of yet.  The areas they will go to will be on the down low, for safety reasons, Area 51 type of secrecy said Wes.  Wes has talked to some others who have supported the troops with shows and they say it is "mind blowing."  Marianella asks about being nervous, Doug said he had previously skydived, so he isn't scared in the least.

Wes gives a shoutout to some women who had went to their last show with 3 Doors Down in Jackson, MS, they had brought them shirts that said "Freak of the World" and that they were cool.  The interview closes out with comments that they are going to get a short break, hit the road with Nickelback, heading to Iraq, then start working on the third album.  Steven congratulates them for their efforts to go to Iraq and working to get the viewers to go to the voting polls.

08-12-04 CNN Headline News

CNN Headline News entertainment host Brooke Anderson had a chance to talk to Wes and Doug in L.A. about the band's upcoming opportunity to play for the troops in Iraq in the fall.  In between clips of their newest video for Spin You Around, Doug commented they are so appreciative for the job the troops are doing overseas and it is the least they can do.  The soldiers come to their shows in the U.S. and the band is fortunate to meet them.  Brooke mentioned that bands have been vocal about their different political opinions and Doug points out that it is important to vote and people can register to vote at puddleofmudd.com or rockthevote.com.

The general status of rock music is brought up to Wes, some believe it isn't as popular as it once was, but he believes it is cyclical, it is a struggle, there are many genres but rock is not dead, it will be back.  Brooke asks Doug about the current tour and he replies it is a good match, they played with 3 Doors Down and Nickelback; it was a good value for the fans, and that Puddle would going back out on tour with Nickelback soon.  Wes is ready after this part of the west coast tour to rest up and get their new material ready for a new album; they have no plans to slow down.  Brooke thanks Wes and Doug and plugs their album Life On Display and their current tour.

08-14-04 Spike TV, Midnight Spike

While in New York City doing promotional work plugging the new video for Spin You Around, Wes and Doug stop by the Spike TV studio and give us an unusual look into the humorous side of Puddle.  They give some highlights about the making of the video, the video was self-produced and they were involved in the entire process, concept, financing, and production.

Next it is time for 'bar games' on Midnight Spike and the object is to reply honestly to the somewhat risqué questions.  If the answer is yes, you chug your beer.  The question just happens to be inside a 'break away' beer bottle that gets crushed on the intern's head, which makes for some funny moments.

Number one, have you ever gotten so wasted that you woke up in another person's bed and didn't know their name?  Everyone confesses yes and it's time to drink up. Two, have you ever had sex in a public place? Time to party up, yes all around.  Three, have you ever been kicked out of a bar?  Guilty, on all counts.  Four, have you ever gotten a chicks name tattooed anywhere?  Wes is the first to admit that it isn't a good idea, it wasn't him but someone else he will leave nameless.  Five, have you ever partied so hard that you puked then made out with someone?  Only the host said no, Wes and Doug had another round, they were definitely having fun during this taping.

09-26-04 MTV – News bit of POM in Iraq including a clip

10-03-04 TV Guide Channel, Close Up

Madison Michelle from TV Guide's Close Up program gave us a quick update on the latest news from Puddle of Mudd, their ties to Fred Durst, the first album's success, and that the band had just played for the troops in Iraq.  Wes was happy to show us around their digs on wheels, the "original rock and roll tour bus."  We get a good look at the current 'junk bunk' that has an assortment of unusual stuff, including a Nickelback signed drumhead.  We pass the "world's smallest bathroom," and Wes is in the driver's seat, seems he might get to take a turn at driving occasionally.

Madison gives props to the first album Come Clean's four hits, including Blurry and She Hates Me, both had achieved most played status by ASCAP in 2002 and 2003.  Wes can't figure out why the crowds like She Hates Me, maybe it is the F word and he laughs.  She comments on the Iraq show and said the troops were familiar with the band, and that an injured soldier had passed on his well-deserved bronze star to the band.  Wes closes out the news brief and said TV Guide is one "hell of a station."

10-08-04 The Dennis Miller Show

CNBC's late night host Dennis Miller was genuinely proud to introduce Wes and delved right into questions about the band's current excursion to Iraq to perform for the troops.  He opened with some live band footage of She Hates Me, shot from the stage in the desert and thinks more people should be stand up people like this band.  Wes is wearing a military shirt complete with different division insignias and an MP armband.  Dennis questions how were they picked to go and Wes elaborates there had been a poll of the troops; everyone wanted to see Puddle.  When they were approached to go, though they were apprehensive safety wise, they were quick to say yes.

It was an amazing show said Wes; all three of their performances overseas in fact were some of their best ever.  After playing in Baumholder, Germany, they were off to Kuwait and it was then they began to see the seriousness of the situation.  After a layover in Kuwait, it was off to Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, Iraq on a C-130.  They felt protected, everyone was watching out for their safety.  Their venue was a stage of six truck trailers pulled together, complete with armored tanks for security in the middle of a bombed out soccer stadium with over 2,000 troops on hand.  Rock and liquor typically go together, but within this war zone there isn't any alcohol allowed, but everyone rocked hard, sober and all.  Dennis comments that had to be all adrenaline, and Wes agreed; they were all pumped.  They had to wear combat gear and that was scary.

Not to leave out the expected lifestyle of 'typical' rock and rollers, Dennis just had to ask Wes if he scored with one of the women, which put with a big grin on Wes' face as he stated it was, "strictly business," which brings laughter from the audience.

Dennis doesn't hesitate to say he loves them for going over there, what is the general political opinion when he met some of the soldiers over there, they are young and make you "humble, they are for it," how does that come across?  Wes talks about the band going to the hospitals and seeing the wounded soldiers, he hates they are getting hurt, but they are doing their jobs and you have to support them.  If they were asked to go back, would they and Wes said, "Hell yeah."  One great point Dennis makes is the military really should put a limit on the time spent in the war zone by the soldiers, they are brave but be reasonable with what they expect of them.  Dennis gives high props to Wes and his band mates for going overseas, it makes him proud and says, they are similar to legendary Bob Hope, and "they have the same good heart my friend," complete with a gentlemen's handshake.

10-11-04 The Late, Late Show

MTV's Damien Fahey hosts this episode of CBS's The Late, Late Show (previously known as The Late, Late Show with Craig Kilborn), and his guest Wes recounts his experience in Iraq.  Wearing jeans and a sports coat, Wes looks relaxed and is quite humorous during the interview.

Damien asks for extra applause to recognize the band's gesture to go to Iraq.  He asks why they went to overseas and Wes tells of the poll requesting them to and they were excited to, "play in the desert where it is smoking hot."  They played in a stadium for 2,000 soldiers, they are proud of the job they are doing over in Iraq.  Damien had to ask if there are hot 'chicks' over in Iraq, as a strategy we should drop hot chicks instead of bombs.  Wes said, "there are a lot of beautiful women in the military, it's been done."

Damien had a hard time trying to host this show, he was nervous enough, let alone go to Iraq.  Wes explains the journey over there on the C-130 aircraft, and the evasive landing maneuvering required along with helmets and bulletproof vests.  The troops did a great job taking care of the band while they were there, protecting their safety and the troops are doing a good job overseas.  Damien asked about the general morale of the troops and Wes said that the troops were glad to see them and happy to have some rock music from home and hopefully it kept their spirits up.  They played some new material from Life On Display and the hits from Come Clean.

They continued the segment with a game Damien played with a previous guest called, "Doughnut or Done It."  The pretense is to guess from a taken-on-the-street clip, whether that person had a doughnut or done it.  Wes is up to the game and his particular clip is an elderly woman who is dining at a sidewalk café.  Damien asks the question and the clip pauses giving Wes a chance to give his answer.  Wes gets this quirky look on his face then decides he thinks she probably, "done a doughnut," before finally choosing doughnut. Wes gets surprised as we get to see the patron admit to having 'done it,' and we get a big 'whoa' from Wes.  As a prize the patron gets her choice of doughnuts but she said she only likes jelly doughnuts and Damien is happy to oblige and they share a jelly doughnut.

Damien continues the interview and asks about his musical heroes and Wes recalls playing with Jimmy Page and drops a major announcement that there are plans for him to do a song with Carlos Santana who has a new album coming up.  One last question, what kind of music does Wes listen to and he replied, he likes old school music, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and AC/DC.

REWIND 2004

On May 18, 2004 Puddle were performing a concert at Oklahoma City's Bricktown Event Center, a hometown show for drummer Greg Upchurch.  On the same date on the west coast in Los Angeles, Wes was about to be honored at the 2003 21st ASCAP Pop Awards and although he couldn't attend, former band mate Jimmy Allen represented him.  Wes and Jimmy had co-wrote one of 2003's biggest hit songs She Hates Me and Jimmy was able to pass on the news to Wes via telephone.  It was an exuberant time for Wes personally on the heels of his second ASCAP Award, life was good.

In 2004, Puddle had accomplished several firsts in their careers, their likeness depicted on a Nascar, the journey to Iraq and Germany to support the troops, and  Life On Display was certified Gold (500,000 copies) by the RIAA on February 6 despite a shortage of nationwide promotion.

This year included a large amount of magazine coverage in Hit Parader, Metal Edge, Modern Drummer, Guitar One, Guitar World Acoustic, Drum, Bass Guitar, Circus, Revolver, Zink, and even Hustler.  A few notables include Wes and Paul who graced the cover of the January issue of Guitar One, Doug had a full page feature in February's Bass Guitar, February's Guitar World Acoustic did a story on Wes and Paul, February's Hit Parader carried an in depth article with Wes, and Greg had landed his first solo cover in May's Modern Drummer magazine that included an eight page spread.

Radio was another format for Puddle to keep in touch with the listeners on L.A.Lloyd, and several appearances on both Rockline and  Loveline.  Loveline always provides funny moments while the band dishes out advice on someone's love life, but one episode was unique as it was more geared to Puddle's trip to Iraq.  Rockline also had a similar format on one Puddle appearance, fielding questions and compliments from the fans regarding their Iraq adventure.  Radio stations conducted many interviews live from venues during their tour and through the magic of Internet streaming, one could be 2,000 miles away and still feel like they were there in the middle of the excitement.  Planet 93.3 in Jacksonville, Florida had hometown musician Paul in their studio in October discussing his perception of their concerts in Iraq and Germany, giving us an inside look at how supportive the band is towards the troops, without giving a stance on the rights or wrongs on the war itself.

One couldn't escape Puddle, even if they tried. Their music was becoming a household name with snippets of songs cropping up in movies and television shows such as The O.C., The Punisher, MTV, ESPN, and even into the wrestling world of WWE as Nothing Left To Lose was the feature music for Royal Rumble.

But nothing beats, 'seeing is believing,' as was evident when Puddle invited their fans to the taping of their upcoming DVD to be released in 2005.  November 11 at Los Angeles' Key Club was filled to capacity with Muddfans, some who had come from across country to become part of the special event.  It gave the fans something to look forward to and fans talked about the performance on the band's message board, creating a big buzz with their online community.

Every band has their day they would like to forget, rock and roll is unpredictable.  Despite all of Puddle's successes from 2001 to now, some will always choose to focus on the one thing that stands out as a monumental blip on the Puddle radar that made everyone come to a grinding halt like a deer in headlights.

Toledo.  Toledo, Ohio, February 22, 2004, a day that left a bad taste in the mouth of everyone who was there, the fans, the band, and also Wes.  Even those who weren't at the club Headliners were left shocked and devastated by the night's events as word spread on the band's message board by concertgoers who had witnessed a rock-bottom-rock-show.  The crowd had anticipated a full-on concert, but within a few songs into the set, it was evident there was a derailment in progress by Wes that ended with his band mates walking off stage mid-show, Wes' solo attempt to keep the show going without much success, the cancellation of the concert followed by Wes' arrest by the Toledo Police Department.  The Toledo Blade and WTOL covered this breaking story and it was picked up by many major music news sources. News spread like wildfire.

Incoherent and unable to perform for whatever reason, the events of the night led many to speculate for a possible reason and a cause.  While there is by no means a justification of the events that took place either before, during, or after that lead up to Wes' temporary fall from the fans' grace, there is also no justification for people or Puddle's fans to publicly comment for the sole purpose to be hurtful or gossip in a slanderous manner just to take digs at someone who had a stumble.  No opinion should be stifled or is less important than another, people have a right to express their opinion as they see it, it is what makes America, America.  It is when it becomes malicious that it is unfair to all parties involved, and in the end there were a lot of hurtful things said that had no basis other than to be intentionally destructive.

It's part of their history, albeit an unpleasant part.  It was a regrettable incident that can't be undone and time moves on, it doesn't wait for us as we straddle the fence while deciding which way to fall in regards to forgiveness, we all make our own choices and I chose forgiveness a long time ago.

It was a great year for Puddle of Mudd, and it left the fans wondering what was next in 2005.
