06-16-05 DVD REVIEW

"Striking That Familiar Chord," Puddle Of Mudd (Eagle Vision)

• HH

This May 31 DVD features modern rockers Puddle Of Mudd (guitarist/vocalist Wes Scantlin; guitarist Paul Phillips; bassist Doug Ardito; drummer Greg Upchurch), filmed in high definition at Los Angeles' Key Club on Nov. 16, 2004.

Their hits "Blurry," "Away From Me" and the kind of witty "She Hates Me" are all included in the 140-minute set, and the bonus commentary is enlightening. The band is currently in the studio working on the follow-up to 2003's "Life On Display." Their debut, 2001's "Come Clean," sold 5 million copies.

This DVD serves as a snack to whet fans' appetites for the upcoming album. Bonus acoustic performances of several songs, the aforementioned commentary, interviews and an intense show are what they'll get with this package. The low star rating just points out that this music (especially the nasal-sounding vocals) isn't my particular cup of tea. However, I enjoyed some of the songs, including the hits mentioned above and "Cloud 9."

The visuals are top quality, the sound is great, and the production is top-notch. Modern rock fans will dig this one. Get it locally, or visit www.puddleofmudd.com or www.eaglerockent.com
